Haiti

Lighthouse Baptist Church has a love for the people of Haiti. Several church members go to serve in Haiti all throughout the year. Below is a list of mission opportunites that you can be praying for, serve in, and give to.

Haitian Creole Bibles

Because of the extreme impoverished economic conditions in Haiti, the majority of Christians do not have their own copy of the Bible. Through the Haitian Creole Bible Ministry, Haitians of every age are given the oportunity to memorize and recite Bible verses to “earn” a Bible. The memorization of scripture demonstrates their sincere heart felt desire and commitment to God’s word, This program continues with the assistance of locally trained persons. Support funds are necessary for the continued purchasing of Bibles in their native language. This is an excellent ministry to ensure that those who desire a copy of God’s word, can get their very own copy. The total cost of one Bible is approximately $20 dollars.

Adult Education

The illiteracy rate among adults in Haiti is quite high. Local pastors had been praying for an education program for the adult church members. The adults primarily wanted to learn to read, so they could read their Bibles. After much prayer, the Adult Education Program was initiated. The Adult School has approximately 45 first through sixth graders, from young adult ages to elderly. The school is held in the church from 1-4 pm on MWF, to alow them to maintain their other household and work responsibilities. Not only does this opportunity provide basic education, it promotes Christian felowship and support. Each class begins with Bible reading, songs and prayer. The adult students are very encouraging of each other as they struggle together to learn basic skills of reading, writing and very basic arithmetic. Support for this ministry goes to paying the salaries of the two teachers. The students must purchase their own supplies such as notebooks and pencils.

School Children Feeding Program

All interested supporters are encouraged to explore www.mfkhaiti.org. This is an organization that we partner with to provide nourishment to approximately 300 students daily. “Vitamumba” are packets of peanut butter infused with vitamins and minerals to provide a nutritious meal.

Three months after this program was initiated, a Haitian teacher at one of the schools was interviewed concerning the results of the program. The teacher reported fewer absents, higher grades, and overall improvement in student performances.

Widows Rice Program

Haiti does not have any government social programs. Widows who are older, and unable to work, rely on handouts and often starve from malnutrition. Several times during the year, money is wired to local pastors to purchase rice and oil for these widows.
